Gold as Sticky Tape: The KISS Method for 2D Materials & ARPES

Two-dimensional (2D) materials host novel quantum effects but require large, ultra-clean samples for angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Standard exfoliation often introduces contamination, even in controlled environments.

This talk presents the kinetic in situ single-layer synthesis (KISS) method, which exfoliates 2D materials directly under ultra-high vacuum, avoiding air exposure. The method produces large, high-quality flakes — including air-sensitive materials — on gold, silver, and germanium substrates. ARPES measurements confirm their excellent electronic quality.

KISS is simple, reliable, and enables in situ preparation of clean 2D materials for advanced electronic studies.
